Radim Štukavec: Aviation is fascinating

02.02.2012

We introduce young faces of our company

Radim Štukavec

designer/engineer electric

Before you joined ZLIN AIRCRAFT you had studied electrical engineering.  Could you give more details about your studies?

I completed the faculty of electro engineering and communication technologies in Brno, program „electro technology, electronics, communication and control technology“ specialization „electronics and communication technology“. After graduation I continued with PHd for three years. I published the results of my research in specialized conferences and foras and in expert magazines. A teaching was an obligatory part of the curriculum so I also lectured laboratory measuring. Before completing the dissertation I left for ZLIN AIRCRAFT and due to heavy workload I have not be able to finish the dissertation so far. Beside that the topic of the paper is a bit out of my current profession (Computer simulation of digital TV broadcasting).

When doing his job, the designer should „live with“ aviation. How is it in your case?

I am fascinated by aviation – who would not be taken away by moving through the air, which used to be the domain of birds in a machine heavier than the air, right? As a child, my most loved book was an encyclopedia of aero planes. Then I glued plastic kits and continued with radio control models.  I love technology in general, so complex machines like aero planes attract me a lot. I always loved reading history of individual aircraft, particularly „extras and backroom information form their development. Unfortunately I myself have not reached the final phase – flying.

And your personal opinion on ZLIN?

Classic of the classics, legend of Czechoslovak sport aviation. Thousands of pilots learned flying on them. Its construction proves the tradition since times, when things were designed and manufactured really cleverly. I am half way now in building a kit of the “Trener” model.

How did you get into ZLIN AIRCRAFT?

By pure coincidence. I searched LZIN AIRCRAFT web while preparing for building a new model. As I was approaching the end of my studies I clicked on „Career“ as a habit. There I found a vacant position of „electrical designer“. As I have been interested in aviation for a long time and the requirements meet my profile I saw it as a chance of lifetime how to enter into aviation industry. And I made it!

A job should be a hobby, ideally. Which it is in your case. What makes the fun for you and what you see its biggest benefit?

I do enjoy the feeling of „be part of it“. To have access and solve details, which other people have no clue about that they even exist. Most of people see aero planes only in the air. Some of them touch them during air shows or when visiting aero clubs. Even less of them are taken up there. Few of them have a pilot license. But only really individuals have a chance to change or improve them. I have this privilege.

What is really the content of your job?

It starts from communication with other manufacturers of components and their selection, through designs of electrical circuits and connections, design of building them in, preparation of production documentation up to the design of processes and protocols for set up and testing of functions.

Design is a part of development and development in aviation means works on new prototypes and their parts. What does it feel like taking part in creation of new aero planes?

To be honest, it is like a rollercoaster. Ups and downs. It is fabulous when everything works fine and we progress. It is less fabulous when the deadlines are coming too close, something does not work as I envisaged it. Perhaps nobody loves to redo his own work, which took so much time and energy already. But this is simply the pitfall of the development.

What is the biggest job challenge for you?

Definitely it is a modernization of ZLINs, of their parts and innovation of electro installations. It is a very complex project, where a whole bunch of technical details and complications had to be solved. Fortunately we managed to do it. This was a really good (and admittedly relatively hard) lesson for me.

Let´s talk about your private life now. How do you relax from your work?

I have a number of hobbies. The biggest being electro technical, flying kits and do-it-yourself in general. As for the kits, I build and fly electrically powered semi-models of aero planes, especially aerobatic ones and high performance electrical gliders. When the weather is nice and no wind, I drive out of town to fly at least one model. It is an excellent relax for me. Evenings I think of improvements of both airframes and electrics. Lately I reduced active sporting, yet I like biking in summer and skiing in winter.

ZLIN AIRCRAFT RE-ACTIVATES LATINE AMERICA

20.01.2012

Our goal was to speak with the operators of ZLINs, listen to their experience and based on them to ascertain chances in the new markets or new market segments. „We believe that South American market is a good prospect and in certain areas it is still standing at the start line of the use of training and sport aeroplanes,“ clarified Jiri Tutter in charge of company´s business development .
Praising words of the current operators – Peruvian Air Force (Fuerza Aérea del Peru) and  Mexican Navy Air Force (Armáda de México) re-enforced our belief that ZLIN aeroplanes are ideal for local difficult climate as well as terrain conditions thanks to its construction features as well as flight characteristics.
Our team also discussed with private sector and ministries in all visited countries. They brought back the prospect of new early deliveries of training aircraft to new as well as to the current customers.

Eighteen units of „Two-four-two“ have been serving very well to Fuerza Aerea de Peru. Other ten units have been  flying in the training center of Armáda de México.

Z 242 L: Easy to fly, yet aerobatically so capable

20.10.2011

Words: Nick Bloom, Photos: Keith Wilson

If you want to sample aerobatics, the two questions foremost in your mind will be where, and in which aeroplane. The latter question is even more important if you plan to do more than just try a loop and roll. If your intention is to complete the AOPA Aerobatics course or to enter a beginners´ aerobatics contest, choosing the right aeroplane can trim hours off your training schedule.
One of the less well known options among the various types for hire in the UK is an aircraft that looks rather tame for aerobatics, although the Czechoslovakian company that started making it back in 1980s, has an international reputation within the sport dating back to the 1930s. Zlin´s long wing Trener monoplanes with their equally long nose cowlings enclosing a Walter four-or six-in-line engine swept aside all opposition in international aerobatics in the late Sixties and early Seventies, until displaced by the Pitts Special. Zlin had resurgence later with the Zlin 50, which won the World Aerobatic Championships in 1984 and 1986.

With such a history, you´d expect even the rather staid-looking Z 242 L (the “L” stands for Lycoming) to be an aerobatic thoroughbred, but some rather odd things happened behind the Iron Curtain in its final decades, and maybe this Zlin is a bit of dual. At least, that´s what I´m thinking as I head out to sample one.

There are currently three Zlin Z 242 Ls on the G-register. One is used for spin training at Oxford Aviation Academy – so its use is restricted to their commercial students.
However, two others, one belonging to Aeros at G-register. One is used for spin training at Oxford Aviation Academy – so its use is restricted to their commercial students. However, two others, one belonging to Aeros at Gloucestershire Airport and the other based at Wickenby, are available to hire for aerobatic training at around £200 an hour. That´s attractive pricing compared with the obvious alternatives (an Extra 200 or 300 Pitts S-2) though it´s not as cheap as a Cessna Aerobat. I am about to sample the Wickenby Z 242 L, which was built in 1996. With me at Wickenby are Bob Morecom in Chipmunk cameraship, cameraman Keith Wilson, and my safety pilot – one of Britain´s top aerobatic aces and co-owner of Wickenby – Gerald Cooper.
Gerald has to critique a couple of local pilots at a practice site a few miles away, but suggests that in the meantime I collect the Z 242 L from where it´s positioned on the far side of the airfield and taxi it to the Tower, where the cameraship is parked. A local kindly drives me down in his car. Between us we figure out how to open the canopy: climb up onto the wing via a step on the fuselage, turn a catch and slide the whole caboodle forwards. I look down into the space now revealed and, slightly dismayed, mutter under my breath, “Looks heavy”.

“As the panel fit would suggest, the 242 can also be used as an instrument flying trainer. The details design is excellent and the controls and systems are very well engineered”

If you like military cockpits, you´ll love the Z 242 L, because everything is substantial, designed for big men with big hands and bigger feet. I lower myself into the seat – which has a back parachute already waiting and examine the banks of switches and dials, trying to figure out what´s where. Two things I identify immediately: a big flap lever with three settings, flight, takeoff and landing, and an elevator trim wheel, both between the seats. There´s also a (probably superfluous with only 200hp) manual rudder trim.

The master switch sets up a whine from several gyros and there are several other switches that seem appropriate to flick up – one for engine instrumentals, for instance. With vague memories of other fuel injected Lycomings, I check the fuel is on – there´s a big circular selector on the centre console – set mixture rich, switch on the electric fuel pump until the needle in the fuel pressure dial flickers, pull the mixture to lean, set the throttle plunger, shout “clear prop” and twist the one non-military object in view, the starter key, past both to start. There´s a whirring noise from the started motor, but the three-blade, constant-speed MT propeller fails to move. I switch everything off and gem my helper to turn the propeller ninety degrees. Somewhat to the surprise of both of us, that does the trick. The engine cranks wheezily, kicks, wheezes some more, kicks again and suddenly bursts into life. I remember to push in the mixture control.
My helper returns to his car and I slide aft and lock the canopy (an effective, single lever in the roof), sit and allow the battery to charge for a bit (the switch marked generator is up), meanwhile studying the cockpit for more clues. Everything eventually starts to make sense, so I take my toes off the brake pedals and gently shove in the centre throttle plunger to get the beast moving.
At the point I realise there is a second plunger on the left of the panel and swap bands on the big, curved control stick so that I´m now holding it back with my right hand instead of my left.
Some initial impressions: one is that the Zlin has a very big cockpit indeed. Lots of sunshine streaming in and a splendid view in all directions, including, of the up-turned tips of the somewhat stubby, constant-chord wings.

“In classic military trainer style, the seat backs are recessed to accommodate parachutes. The external power socket and fuel filters are also well thought out and engineered”

The cockpit is “used”, paint worn away in places – that sort of things. (All three Z 242 Ls on the G-register have quite high hour, this one has around 2000).
The pedals have negative-G straps to stop your feet floating off when upside-down, which is promising. The stick feels “floaty” which suggests nicely engineered, low-friction control links and good mass balancing, which is more promising still. The undercarriage isn´t particularly soft, but even so we sway about when crossing the grass, which suggests a rather heavy aircraft – in fact, its empty weight is 730kg, as against 521kg for the Pitts Special S2B and 540kg for the Extra EA-200, so it is.

However, in trying terms at least, the 200hp produced by the AEIO-360-A1B6 Lycoming feels adequate. The engine, with its single exhaust stack below the cowling, has a nice growling tone.
I reach the Chipmunk and park the Zlin next to it without difficulty, leave the engine running for another minute or two and pull out the mixture control, then switch everything off.
While waiting for Gerald, I peer into the main wing tanks – both close to full – and the auxiliary wing tanks, both (as placarded for aerobatics) dry. All four tanks together hold 230 litres, giving a range of 570nm. One of the virtues of the Z 242 L is that it can be used in a wide variety of roles, including the “squadron hack”, ferrying people about. The Z 242 L is normally flown at a cruise speed of 120kt, so it is quite a sensible cross-country machine. The rear shelf looks big enough to hold a couple of man-size overnight bags under it safety webbing straps. (Incidentally, I note, the fire extinguisher is located within easy reach, in the same location.)

Earlier, I´d examined the information plate in the cockpit which gives suggested entry speeds for a range of manoeuvres, and taken note of the one really important speed – the minimum entry for a loop, given at 130 kt.

“One manoeuvre I hadn´t expected to see listed was a negative spin. My appreciation of the Zlin grows: that´s an advanced manoeuvre for an aerobatic trainer”

Gerald arrives and after a briefing with the others we settle into the cockpit, Gerald taking the right seat, both of us first strapping on our parachutes. We also plug in our headsets. The sockets are somewhat awkwardly located alongside the seats against the cockpit walls, which makes them a bit fiddly to get at.

Finally, we fasten our straps – a single, five-point harness, including the negative G strap that comes up from the floor. Gerald points out the typically Zlin (he says) buckle with a yellow setting for not quite locked and a red for fully home. I slide my seat to its furthest forward position, which doesn´t feel quite forward enough (built for big men again!) As usual, with my lack of height I could do with cushions, both below and behind. However, I´m reasonably OK and we don´t really have time to go looking for them. Also we are planning some negative G on this sortie and cushions are a bad ideal in aerobatics – they can move about and end up in the wrong place, and they stop you strapping in tightly.

The two aircraft line up, and as soon as the Chipmunk starts moving I release the brakes and go to full throttle. The Chipmunk, at approximately three-quarters the Zlin´s power and weight, has roughly the same power-to-weight ratio, so we both accelerate at roughly the same speed. However, the Chipmunk´s wing area is fifteen per cent greater than ours. So it´s no surprise when the Chippie lifts off first...nor that it ascends like a balloon on full burner, leaving us well below.

The Zlin is a doddle to take off in, not unlike a PA-28, although the controls are somewhat lighter (and you´re using a stick instead of a yoke). The full power of the controls only becomes apparent later in the flight, at higher rates of deflection: with the modest movements I´m making during the take off run, they are unremarkable. For instance there´s none of the overcontrolling “wobble” you get with some light sport aircraft. The takeoff run seems to be about 250 metres, with a modest headwind, off a hard runway.
There´s neither the kick in the back nor the squirreling of an Extra or Pitts Special on takeoff. In fact, no drama at all – which would make a good start for a nervous student used to calmer aeroplanes.

We maintain an unconventional formation during the climb-to-altitude, with me throttled back to avoid overtaking. I squeeze as much climb as possible out of the Zlin, but the lead aircraft is always well above our heads. It ´s only when the Chippie stops climbing and levels out that we are able to draw alongside. The first part of the photoshoot, which contains no aerobatics, is a real pleasure until we get to the “head-on” shot, of which more in moment. The controls are powerful and light, but not unduly so, making it easy to respond accurately and immediately to Keith Wilson´s requests to move in or out, up or down when you throttle back, having so much weight, but not excessively. When Keith wants me to draw ahead, we run of puff a couple of time and I have to ask Bob to throttle back. There´s not much reserve power in the Zlin. My first attempt at the breakaway shot is a dud:

“We roll so rapidly that Keith doesn´t even have time to operate the shutter. This is when I first realise that the controls, particularly aileron, are progressive, the power increasing markedly with deflection”

The second time, I roll much more slowly.
The controls are nicely harmonised and the aeroplane has quite a lot of stability for an aerobatic machine, which makes it very pleasant to fly. I´m really starting to like it and I realise that it´s actually quite a light aircraft, in terms of feel at any rate.

However, when go into a steep, ascending sideslip for the head-on shot, I get repeated nibbles of approaching stall. Gerald feels them too and mutters a word of warning. This is unprecedented: the aircraft I´ve flown up until now don ´t usually exhibit pre-stall buffet in this situation. To avoid the hazard, I accelerate the Zlin towards the Chipmunk in balanced flight and only cross the controls as we get close. The sideslip acts as an aerodynamics brake and we stop advancing just at the distance where Keith´s finger operates the shutter. Perfect!
This is also the point at which I first discover another feature of the Zlin – a relatively weak rudder, which limits the tightness of the sideslip.

Our previously agreed schedule next calls for the Zlin to roll inverted alongside the Chipmunk for an upside-down photograph. I apply full left aileron and we´re upside down almost instantly, thanks to the aircraft´s excellent roll rate.

As we roll, I push the stick forwards in order to position the nose above the horizon by what I guess will be the right amount – enough to stay level without climbing or descending. But that isn´t enough. The wing evidently requires a steeper pitch angle to maintain flight upside-down.
The effect is to drop us below the Chipmunk. We separate and re-group for a second try.
This time I draw well ahead before rolling inverted. Over we go, and Gerald and I hang upside-down in our straps with the familiar negative-G felling of blood poling in one´s head.
Bob says over the radio that the Zlin (which ought to be going slower with the additional drag of an inverted wing) is drawing away, so I push harder on the stick and throttle back as much as I dare, not wanting to risk a stall. It is only when I have the stick pushed to the full extend of my arm and the throttle at half power that the Chipmunk is able to catch up and Keith take his photograph.

A truly axial roll in the Zlin evidently requires it to be unusually nose-high when inverted. Having said that, in a competiton you would probably be best advised to compromise, or the judges would be bound to penalise you for having “barrelled” the roll. Fascinating stuff!
The slight element of comedy that has entered the sortie grows considerably in the next manoeuvre, a formation loop.

“No need to pretend to look happy for the camera: this is an aeroplane that really does put a smile on your face”

Both aircraft dive together, but as soon as the Chipmunk starts to pitch up, it shoots ahead. It´s that mis-match in wing area again. We lumber behind at a steadily increasing distance and barely make it over the top of the loop in a series of incipient stalls (each one stopped before it starts by relaxing the stick). Flying alongside a Chipmunk, our entry speed for the loop had to be only 130kt, the minimum placarded for the manoeuvre in the Zlin.

We finish the sortie with a formation stall turn (yawing in opposite directions at the top). The two aircraft are better matched for this and Keith gets some good shots.
The Chipmunk heads back to Wickenby, leaving us to fly some solo aerobatics.
I begin with a short solo aerobatics. I begin with a short sequence – a loop, half reverse Cuban, half-Cuban and a stall turn.
Gradually I get the hang of the elevator control and begin to avoid a untidy series of incipient stalls at the top of looping manoeuvres. It´s more a matter of timing than anything else, pitching more slowly and making the loop bigger. Try and to tight and that lack of wing area in relation to power and weight makes itself felt.

Within a short while I feel as though I´m beginning to master the Zlin, flying big, graceful manoeuvres without much height loss. The aeroplane is now flying smoothly, without any jerks.
The stall turns I fly (four or five altogether) show that the aircraft isn´t especially sensitive as regards timing. The Zlin is forgiving. Only one stall turn comes near the “sweet spot” – going to full left rudder at exactly the right moment, following progressive application of right rudder on the vertical climb to offset propeller spiral airflow. You can tell when you hit it right because the aeroplane yaws cleanly without hesitation and without trying to roll or pitch. I can tell when I don´t get it right because of having to correct with elevator and aileron, but the Zlin lets me disguise my error and performs a yaw rotation the judges would find acceptable.
The half-loop, half-roll manoeuvre seems to require a relatively high entry speed, as does the (very successful) avalanche I fly. Sadly, the Zlin is no longer cleared for intentional flick rolls, but the one flown at the top of a loop doesn´t really count – at that speed and nose-high attitude, it´s a very low-G rotation, more akin to a one-turn spin.

An aileron or axial roll is very easy with such a rapid roll rate. However, flying a four-point roll (stopping every ninety degrees) turns out to be more demanding. The weak rudder – and perhaps a somewhat forward centre of gravity – means that you run out of control authority in the final quarter, either dropping the nose slightly or yawing off-axis or both. Gerald asks to have a go and tries twice without much more success than me (although, typical of an Unlimited pilot, he makes each aileron deflection full-on, and blurringly rapid, in contrast to my more leisurely control inputs).

I sense that there are ways round this and that, with practice, the Zlin could fly a perfect four-pointer. When I try an eight-point roll, that goes rather better. I do like the feeling that you could get it right in time – it gives you something to aim for.
Next I try vertical rolls, managing a half vertical roll and stall turn without any difficulty. The Zlin might well be able to fly a full 360-degree vertical roll.

I announce that I´m going to fly a one-and a quarter turn spin to the left, and end up over-rotating by 30 degrees – a certain zero in competition. Worse, the recovery felt as if it might easily topple into another spin. Gerald, who was watching my control inputs tells me I´d pushed the stick too far forwards and introduced outspin aileron – the beginnings of an inverted spin. I´d felt it beginning and instinctively centred the controls, which are lighter than I´m used to.

My second attempt at a spin is more accurate, but I sense that this isn´t a particularly easy or forgiving aircraft when it comes to recovery – the controls are too light and too powerful and the spin rotation is too quick. It isn´t fast by aerobatic standards, but it is quick for a training aircraft.
Finally, I try a quarter rolling circle, changing horizontal heading 90° while rolling in the same direction through 360° (which means that after turning through 45°, the aircraft is inverted). This the Zlin does very well, although the weak rudder doesn´t make it easy. An outward rolling circle, which I try next, is even more tricky. Still, I sense the aircraft could do it.

“The 242 looks like a typical club trainer and shares the same easy handling, minimising the time to convert type”

As we head back to Wickenby for the couple of quick circuits that will close the sortie, I think through what I´ve learned about the Z 242 L as an aerobatic trainer.
It´s obviously a strong and rugged aeroplane that will stand up well to the rigours of training. (It has the pressure gauge that confirms integrity of the steel tube fuselage common to many Zlins, since Neil Williams famously broke a Zlin Trener. It also has, like the Bulldog, a recorder that tells you when the airframe is approaching its fatigue limits.) The Z 242 L is also comfortable and practical for flying to contests or displays. The ability to fly inverted without worrying about power or oil pressure is a bit asset.

The Zlin´s main virtue, it seems to me, is in its propensity for warning nips – those incipient stalls over the top of over-tight loops, and the hint that I might have begun a second spin after recovering from the first. So many pilots these days go straight on to fly Extras, Pitts Specials or other high performance machines, and many primary aerobatic trainers have had the warning nips removed from them and are a poor preparation. The Zlin is an easy aeroplane in which to learn aerobatics, but it doesn´t make things too easy, which is as it should be.

“A worthy addition to its famous predecessors in competition aerobatics, a beautifully thought-out aeroplane and a fine aerobatic trainer”

It´s also pleasant and un-tiring to fly, because the student isn´t required to fight heavy controls in the name of safety. (Altering the control gearing is one solution of aeroplane designers trying to make aerobatic trainers foolproof; others include a grossly forward C of G.)

The aeroplane is well able to cope with the Standard-level AOPA and British Aerobatic Association syllabuses, and provides a good introduction to Intermediate aerobatics, since it is cleared for tailslides, has the performance for vertical rolls and is also cleared for negative position and is also cleared for negative spins. However, in this respect the withdrawal of approval to intentionally flick roll the aircraft is rather a drawback.

Arriving at Wickenby I set up for what seems like a good approach position with full flap, then realise I´m too high and sideslip. The rather weak rudder limits the additional descent rate this produces, but I end up rumbling in on power anyway. Gerald offers one piece of advice during approach, which is to keep the speed to 70kt, because it can be difficult to recover if you get low and slow – the weight-and-wing-area thing again.

The Z 242 L is nicely stable down the approach, easy and pleasant, with a very good view. I round out and float...and float...before touching down on the mains and letting the nosewheel drop. Not bad but could do better, I think, and announce a go-around. Gerald raises flap to the takeoff position and we lumber back into the air. After a tight, inside-the boundary low circuit (I am flying with the airfield´s co-owner aboard) I come in more accurately and a touch slower, closing the throttle earlier, so that this time I´m holding off before the numbers. I´ve also, thanks to a hint from Gerald, got the throttle fully closed this time – apparently I wasn´t pulling it all the way back before. We touch down just after the numbers and stop with moderate braking in around 250 metres.

As a final comment on the Z 242 L´s virtues, I can tell that it has a well damped undercarriage, so you´d be most unlikely to bounce. It´s not at all tricky to land. In a way, that´s almost a shame, because were this to be a slightly challenging taildragger it would be the perfect introduction to the scary business of landing a Pitts or Extra. On the other hand (and far more importantly) a low hour PA-28 pilot could fly the Z 242 L solo with a minimum of circuit training, leaving him or her free to concentrate on preparing for a first aerobatics contest without having to worry about tailwheel handling.
The Z 242 L strikes me as a worthy addition to its famous predecessors in competition aerobatics, a beautifully thought-out aeroplane and a fine aerobatic trainer.
The Z 242 L is also used throughout the world as a basic trainer, a trainer for instrument flying, a glider tug and as an aerobatic trainer.

Guru attracted attention of NATO Days visitors

27.09.2011
ZLIN Z 242 L Guru (ZLIN AIRCRAFT a.s.)

Approximately 225,000 visitors came to this year’s NATO Days during the last September weekend. They could admire top military technology, e.g. Boeing B-52H Stratofortress strategic bomber, Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refuelling aircraft and fully armed Israeli fighters McDonnell Douglas F-15D Baz. The ZLIN 242 L aircraft stood a good partner to these attractive exhibits, as proved by queues of people interested in the red shining aeroplane and also numerous questions of experts incl. U.S. Air Force servicemen.

ZLIN AIRCRAFT Company became a partner of the 11thNATO Days – we sponsored a ceremonial opening toast. Already on Friday 23rd September we presented our trainer aircraft to delegates of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and also the U.S., Sweden and Austria at the Summit of Visegrad States’ Commanders of Air Forces. The Summit was focused on training new pilots this time. The high-ranking officers – aviators who themselves started at similar planes – were taken with ZLIN aircraft advantages and possible savings resulting from their use for ab initio and basic training.

Alexandr Vondra, Minister of Defence of the Czech Republic, Zbyněk Pavlačík, Chairman of Jagello 2000, Jiří Tutter, representative of ZLIN Aircraft Company, Jaroslav Palas, Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region and Deputy Mayor of Ostrava Dalibor Madej Boeing B-52H Stratofortress (USAF) ZLIN Z 142 C AF (Centrum leteckého výcviku LOM)

We would like to use this opportunity to express our great thanks to everyone who came to see us despite of serious traffic jams resulting from hundreds of thousands of visitors. We were very pleased by the interest of both aviation professionals and amateur enthusiasts. One of them said it all: “The ZLIN aeroplanes are a piece of my heart and I am very happy that their production restarts now, like a phoenix. Maybe a successor to the legendary Z 50 aerobatic special will appear too, sometimes…”

ZLIN AIRCRAFT continues significant investments

15.09.2011

ZLIN AIRCRAFT introduced the completely new four-seater Z 143 LSi Genius at Friedrichshafen international fair in April 2011. In September, the company then completed reconstruction of its premises in order to upgrade work areas to meet today’s aesthetical, technological and environmental standards, together with important savings in operational costs.

The reconstruction allowed to concentrate company’s management, sales, marketing, technical and other departments in joint premises under one roof with a significant part of the production. A welding shop moved to the new premises as well.

“The new concept not only allows more intense and efficient mutual co-operation but also particularly easier and more comfortable experience for visiting business partners and guests.”

As the company offered to the pilots of its aircraft a totally new luxurious cockpit and a panoramic outlook from the up-to-date cabin, its employees now work in comfortable modern offices with amazing view of Otrokovice airfield runway. ZLIN AIRCRAFT is ready to take off to surpass levels defined by phenomenal world-class models like ZLIN Trainer, ZLIN 50, predecessors to today’s upgraded aircraft including the Z 143 LSi Genius.

Old-timer cars pranced around Otrokovice airfield

01.09.2011

Famous classic cars test drove at Otrokovice airfield on Thursday 25th August. The legendary Bugatti 35 was driven by Jean-Pierre Nicolas, head of Peugeot Sport factory team. The automobiles took part in Oldtimer Grand Prix Zlín organized on occasion of 41st Barum Czech Rally Zlín.

Famous old-timer enthusiast and fancier Dr Ladislav Samohýl decided to present eight replicas of legendary racing cars at the event. The Otrokovice airfield provided ideal conditions for test drives. “I was pleased that we were allowed to test the cars at the airfield used by ZLIN AIRCRAFT Company. We hope there will be more such events”, expressed Dr Samohýl his thanks. General public audience could then admire the beautiful vehicles in the streets of Zlín on 26th November. There appeared also Hispano Suiza, Darracq, Jaguar and Walter at the speed trial, beside the Bugatti 35.

Increasing demand for cost-saving programme “MOGAS”

26.08.2011

“The proved BA 95 fuel is intended for operation of Z42, Z43 and Z142 aircraft equipped with M137 and M 337 straight engines in Normal category”, clarifies Mr Síkora, head of Original ZLIN Service Centre that carries out the conversion. The conversion itself includes a modification of fuel system – a set of hosepipes and other parts incl. so called fuel mark with graphical designation and “MOGAS ADAPTED” text. The mark is glued on easily visible and revisable part of the aircraft. The conversion described allows a combined usage of both fuels – aircraft and automotive petrol. Fuel consumption remains the same and also the excellent flight abilities are untouched.

In dependence on up-to-date fuel prices and a type of aircraft, up to CZK 600 can be saved per flight hour. The conversion cost of CZK 60,000 can be paid back in ca. 100 hours of operation, and the operation costs of ZLIN can under certain circumstances become comparable to some ultra-lights.

Especially aeronautical clubs and flight schools will appreciate the possible savings with regard to fuel prices rising to record values. Mr Burian of ZLIN AIRCRAFT Sales Dept. explains, that “because of high fuel prices, many aeronautical clubs and fleet operators have to reduce their flight hours.” , A wide spectrum of other operators will appreciate the savings in operational costs.

The conversions are carried out directly by the Original ZLIN Service Centre in Otrokovice (nearby Zlín) and by authorized services. The operation of ZLIN aircraft with automotive petrol BA 95 is specified in technical norm ČSN EN 228. The technical content of the document is approved based on Design Organization Approval no. EASA.21J.110. Please find further information at http://www.zlinaircraft.eu/en/support.

Please attention: possible mistaken identity!

ZLIN AIRCRAFT a.s. Company is the only certified manufacturer of legendary sports and aerobatic aircraft of ZLIN brand. Only our "Original ZLIN Service" means service of all services for you and your aircraft ZLIN.

New ZLIN aircraft even more affordable

16.06.2011

We do not want to ignore increasing needs and demands of its clients. Therefore it introduces new ZLIN Financial Services with two financial products: ZLIN Rent lease and ZLIN Credit loan. Both products enable very flexible and easy processing and setting the loans for a new a/c of legendary ZLIN brand or even for a more costly overhauls and revisions.

If a client considers acquisition of a new aeroplane through a credit or a lease, we do its best to accommodate his expectations. „The service is designed for clients, who consider the advantages, security and profitability of each transaction“, clarifies Mr. Marek Kurfürst, head of controlling in ZLIN AIRCRAFT a.s. The concept of financial services of a brand is based on understanding of these circumstances whether in business or in a private budgeting.

"ZLIN Rent is a service based on an operation lease. As such it enables clients a regular upgrade of their fleets".

After the expiration of the lease, the client has three options:

  1. Returns the a/c to the lessor and receives back his deposit including accumulated interests.

  2. Extend the lease contract.

  3. Buy the a/c at the book value price (with an option to make use of ZLIN Credit).

The product offers a number of advantageous complementary services, which can help ease the agenda related with the a/c operation.
The contract can be concluded for 12 months period or longer. Another prerequisite is a refundable deposit amounting to CZK 500.000. Provided all the contract provisions have been honoured, the client will get back his deposit including the interests at 1%p.a. (CZK 505.000 for 12 months).

ZLIN Rent is being offered in two versions: Full Service and Standard Service. Monthly payments of both cover these items:

  • Rent;

  • Third party insurance;

  • Accident insurance;

  • Information and organizational support with operation of the a/c.

ZLIN Rent Full Service also includes the price of all the necessary checks and service operations (delivery of the a/c to our service centre in Otrokovice is needed). ZLIN Rent standard supposes that the client arranges service by himself but he must prove that the a/c was properly maintained and serviced during the period of the lease.

If the client is a legal entity or an entrepreneur, all the monthly payments irrespective of the version are deductable for the tax purposes.

"Loan products are quite common way of financing. ZLIN Credit enables for a client to become instantly a proud owner of ZLIN a/c. The product is flexible enough enabling the client to modify the terms in line with his actual needs".

Flexibility, simplicity and specific advantages of the loan product are factors, which allow for everybody to make his own choice. Depreciation of the a/c is fully under client´s control, which can also claim VAT refund from the complete purchase price of ZLIN a/c. A signed contract can be later shorten or prolonged, fully paid back before maturity or additional instalment can be applied.

All these products can be utilized also for bringing older ZLIN a/C back to the airworthy status, for financing of overhauls and revisions. The client can select the instalment calendar in line with his possibilities and needs. ZLIN AIRCRAFT also offers to take over of an a/c, carry out the repair, return the a/c to the operation at the price of the repair. We will also arrange for the insurance of your a/c with the re-known insurer.

ZLIN meeting in Germany lured on Z 143 LSi

13.06.2011

Dozens of famous brand ZLIN aircraft - a symbol of excellent flight characteristics, design and safety - flew together at German airport Oehna-Zellerndorf recently. Our ZLIN AIRCRAFT Company could not miss this “event of the heart”.

Private owners, visitors, club members and other fans of legendary sport and aerobatic aircraft could  admire the shiny aeroplanes several decades old as well as the latest  Zlin Z 143 LSi during the hot spring days from June 3 to 5. Z 143Lsi  was brought in by ZLIN AIRCRAFT Company. Models Z 142, Z 42, Z 43 and Z 226 were the most represented exemplars.

"ZLIN AIRCRAFT representatives took the best opportunity to introduce to German professional visitors the company and its complete manufacturing and service program and took the opportunity to enter into closer cooperation in the field of contracting of spare parts and maintenance".

Entertainment program prepared  by the organizers from the regional Luftsportclubu SFX was a friendly yet fiercful  competition, especially during navigating contest. The best of the best won  prizes provided by ZLIN AIRCRAFT Company.

The meeting finished extremely well. Representatives of our company comment the presentation to be very successful especially   for the re-establishment of closer relationship with true lovers of ZLIN. Participation of ZLIN AIRCRAFT Company was also welcome by local ZLIN operators and professional visitors. They appreciated particularly the interest of the successor in manufacturing the  famous ZLIN in solving their problems with aircraft maintenance and supply of spare parts.

AMU VIEWER: Fatigue patrol for ZLINs

07.06.2011

ZLIN AIRCRAFT a.s. has developed a unique assistant to ZLINs´ operators. Acceleration Monitoring Unit (AMU1) VIEWER enables to assess a level of possible fatigue load of an a/c.

AMU Viewer software reports whether a pilot used an a/c for aerobatic or a training purpose or flew in a normal mode within a given time period.

“This new tool will be appreciated particularly by these clients, who lend their a/c to other pilots and have no real possibility to check how their a/c was used.”

The viewer changes the situation now thanks to its new and user friendly software. Aero clubs and flight schools can now easily set the prices for one flight hour and a/c lessor the costs of a/c rental.

Data from the flight book, data from the AMU and installed software are sufficient now for assessment of the fatigue of the a/c. The software is delivered on an installation CD including user´s manual in Czech and English.

AMU1 has been installed onto the a/c used for aerobatics only so far.  Newly it is installed also onto the a/c, which is not subject to intensive aerobatic flying.  Collected and stored data enables for the life time of these a/c to be extended up to 20.000 FH while maintaining high level of safety. ZLIN AIRCRAFT a.s. extends now the advantages of its use to all the clients with the goal of considerable reduction of their maintenance costs. They will now know the health status of their ZLIN a/c in any minute. A detailed monitoring of the operation life of an a/c helps set safe limits of individual components as well as provide a control of actual operational mode with subsequent impact on  costs, maintenance and intervals for exchange of worn parts.

What is pre-requisite for proper function of AMU Viewer:

  • A/c is equipped with the AMU1.
  • The data from the AMU1 were downloaded before and after the period of interest and  the data from the flight book at the moment of download are known.

Users of the software:

  • Aero clubs, flight schools
  • Lessors of ZLIN a/c
  • Owners, who wish to now more details about the status of their a/c

It is important to note that the AMU Viewer software is not designed to assess the overall fatigue load of an a/c, i.e. from its first flight till the last data download from AMU1.

The overall fatigue load of an a/c can be assessed ONLY by ZLIN AIRCRAFT as a manufacturer based on  regularly downloaded and sent data from the AMU1 supported with the information from the flight book.

The users of AMU viewer are advised to go through a basic training by ZLIN AIRCRAFT service centre.

MoGas means Costs Reduction

30.05.2011

Costs saving in the range of tens of EURs per flight hour. We offer now this opportunity to the operators of ZLINs of 40 series through a conversion of engines of their a/c to burning the MoGas.

We want to meet the needs of costs reduction mainly of flight schools and aeroclubs which operate large fleets and which welcome such a conversion.

A simple calculation shows that the fuel costs may drop by up to EUR 25 per flight hour depending on the prices of automobile and aviation gases as well as on the type of the a/c. Coupled with the 100hrs maintenance system it can bring really considerable costs saving to the operators. Such an economy option brings ZLIN´s operational costs to the level of that of ultra light category

Technical adaption allows to burn both types of fuel without increasing the fuel burn or reducing the engine output or flight characteristics of ZLIN a/c.

Mogas 95can be used for Z42,Z43 and Z142 in operation mode “normal”.

The transition is performed by Original ZLIN Service centre in Otrokovice or by a service shop authorized by the manufacturer.

The fuel system must be adapted for the purpose. The price covers the work, a set of special hoses and other parts. It also includes a fuel sticker with an authorizing graphic identification and wording “Adapted for MoGas 95”. The sticker will be placed in an accessible and visible place. A bonus is in a form of a number of possible discounts as well as a guarantee of the best care by qualified technicians with provision of exclusively certified spare parts. Before this adaptation a 100fh check A of the a/c needs to be carried out during which our technicians assess the status of the a/c.

All the information related to the modification of the fuel system can be found in the bulletin on our web www.zlinaircraft.eu. Bulletins can be obtained within a paid service, the access to which is directly on our web.

The use of Mogas 95 in ZLIN a/c follows the specification under ČSN EN 228. Technical content of the document was approved based on the certificate DOA nr.EASA.21J.110.

New ZLIN GENIUS Excited visitors during Aero show

09.05.2011

First surprise followed by praise and congratulations. These three words describe a positive acceptance of ZLIN AIRCRAFT´s stand and its showpiece by the visitors from around the world at the last Aero 2011 show in Friendrichshafen, Germany. We launched a brand new model of ZLIN Z143LSi Genius at one of the largest GA shows. First big appearance of a successor of the world re-known sport and aerobatic aircraft was witnessed in the Hall A3 by over 33 thousands visitors from 6 continent and 40 countries. New ZLIN towered above the rest of the exhibits with its construction and finish and was cordially accepted by the visitors. „I feel very upbeat about our participation at the show judging from the number of positive responses. Many partners confirmed the great prospect of our solution for a niche in the aviation market by providing a luxurious version of an aviation off-road, which can reach the places off the tracks and without paved airstrips in comfort and with baggage. Several of them confirmed on the spot their interest in having the dealership of ZLIN in the most competitive western markets,“ says Jiri Tutter, commercial director of ZLINAIRCRAFT a.s. and continues: „I wish to take this opportunity to express our big thanks to all visitors to our stand for our discussion and their inspirational thoughts, which we will definitely take into account in our next work.“

By having said that he reiterated the importance of the launch of the new ZLIN for future of the brand, which Zdeněk Havner, the chairman of the ZLIN AIRCRAFT a.s. expressed before the start of the show. “Our goals is to continue the famous tradition of Mr. Bata´s original Zlin Aviation Company (Zlínská letecká společnost), which was founded 77 years ago. New ZLIN aircraft will strengthen the position of ZLIN brand in the global market,” Havner promised.

The representatives of the aviation media added their praise too. We have booked the interest of the most important global aviation magazines in the possibility to carry out their own tests of the new ZLIN the results of which will be featured in coming issues. We are convinced they themselves will confirm that the new Z143LSi Genius embodies a truly genius mix of the best what characterizes ZLINs and what each pilot and operator values – excellent flight characteristics, high safety, luxury of a limousine and the latest available avionics with a robust structure, which withstands the handling in a rough terrain.

The visitors to our stand did not admire only the silver pearl flittered with silver-blue letters of the logo ZLIN, which was exhibited in the centre of the stand elevated into a light tilt simulating a flight position. Beside the Genius, they were also interested in other products and exhibits like aircraft wheels and brakes and other aircraft components supported with an informative video presentation.

„We are most happy about the enthusiasm of ZLIN fans for the re-appearance of the brand in the global market with a brand new model, which they like so much,” concluded the first appearance of the new ZLIN Jiri Tutter, commercial director.

Now on gasoline

19.11.2010

Prices of fuel still rise and kerosene is no exception. In order to reduce the cost of flying forclubs and flying schools ZLIN AIRCRAFT offers now a modification of ZLIN airplanes of 40 series to automobile gasoline.

The variability of changes in fuel is welcomed by the operators of small aircraft Z 42, Z 43 and particularly Z 142 with the best piston engine M 337 AK. "Economy" version of ZLIN aircraft is comparable to the operation costs of ultralights. Refuelling of BA 95 eguarantees trouble-free operation of the aircraft.

Declassified: ZLIN aircraft with a new face

03.11.2010

The manufacturer of famous Czech ZLIN aeroplanes, ZLIN AIRCRAFT Company, is preparing a significant facelift of sport aircraft Z 143 LSi.

The transformation will change not only exterior but also interior of the aircraft. The new version will come on the market at the beginning of 2011. The head of ZLIN’s Development Stanislav Tománek discloses more details.

What can new customers expect from the upgraded aircraft?

Time is changing, and so are the needs of our customers. Our company and its products have to respond to current trends. The new version of the Z 143 Lsi with working title “Demonstrator”, will have a smoother bonnet design. The Interior will be completed with a clear glass cockpit. Customers will have a possibility to choose from a wide range of accessories for the four-seater piston engine aircraft.

Can you be more specific?

The aircraft will consist of a greater number of composite materials. These will be used for engine covers, wingtips, and fuselage and cockpit windows. They will make the maintenance easier, it will provide access “under the hood “and enable optimalization of the costs of spare parts.

What changes have you made to the interior?

The central console and roof panels will be completely new, as well as the seats, pedals, sticks and stick flaps and not just in design, but also in their ergonomics. We have improved the quality of materials. The seats will be covered leather in a luxury version. It just depends on the customer’s preference. All the specifications will be adapted to customer’s requirements. The Z 143 LSi will be equipped with modern integrated glass cockpit avionics.

How will new avionics benefit the customer?

It is not just latest technology, but also clarity and integration of devices into the digital multifunctional display. The system is intuitive and set to maximum use. It will provide the pilots a unique overview of the situation of the airplane and also increase their safety.

Highly multifunctional. How will the upgraded aircraft support this strong point of the brand ZLIN?

In short, the use of the aircraft will not be limited. One day, it can be used as a taxi, the other day a pilot can use it for aerobatics and perhaps on weekends it can carry material. The rear seats can be easily removed and thus aircraft offers a large storage space, which can accommodate a bicycle or skis. It depends on the customer, which modification he wants to make use of. We call the version the SUA Sport Utility Aircraft under  the slogan “freedom of use.”

Will the facelift affect flight characteristics?

We do not consider that yet. Flight characteristics are highly valued. The ZLIN Z 143 LSi is a great helper in training pilots as well as for free time and we do not want to change that. Its main advantage is robustness and resistance to abusive handling. Smooth landing on the grass fields belongs to a standard. With its excellent flight capabilities supported by modern design we will raise the utility value to maximum satisfaction of the most demanding customers.

Will spare parts be readily available for this aircraft?

Yes. We upgrade Z 143 LSi with respect to the easy replacement of worn parts worldwide. Spare parts will be optimized for easier ordering by customer not only in Europe but also in America, Australia and other continents. The company ZLIN AIRCRAFT has an improved production and distribution system of spare parts for all its aircraft.
